Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule & Park Sankt Georgen
The eight-hectare, publicly accessible private park of the Sankt Georgen University of Philosophy and Theology lies in the south of Frankfurt am Main between Sachsenhausen and Oberrad and represents a significant garden monument in the city’s history. In the mid-19th century, banker Georg von Saint George commissioned city gardener Sebastian Rinz to transform the former estate with its orchards and vineyards into a spacious summer residence with a landscape garden modeled on the English style.
Under Jesuit auspices since 1925, the park developed between 1974 and 2009 under the direction of the natural philosopher and zoology professor Rainer Koltermann SJ into a botanical gem with hundreds of exotic and often rare plants from all over the world. Some of the old trees are over 160 years old, such as the imposing copper beech on a hill in front of the lecture hall building, which has become the park’s landmark.
Two-thirds of the historic garden ensemble is now a protected landscape, forming a green refuge in the face of climate change, a place where one can breathe deeply and relax beneath its leafy canopy. The university’s spiritual atmosphere seems to extend into the park, embracing every tree, every shrub, every blossom – so tranquil and peaceful is it.
Anyone who wants to actively contribute to preserving this „little piece of paradise“ far into the future has the opportunity to do so with a tree sponsorship.
